The pattern, if you don't already know, is free from Adrian of Hello Yarn. I like the twists she's been putting on traditional Scandinavian patterns. They're nothing like the mittens my aunts used to make and send to us from Norway. Check out her pattern page. I really couldn't help but knit this hat and once it was started it was hard to put down. Such fun watching those skulls and cross bones take shape!
It's made from Dale Heilo on size 3 needles, with a bit of leftover blue of the same yarn for the inside lining. It was stashed yarn originally intended to be another felted crown or two. I would have liked to have knitted some pirate-like phrases into the lining, like "Argh!" or "Ahoy, Matey!" or "Walk the plank!" and "Shiver me timbers!", and I should have made the lining with cotton to make it less scratchy on the forehead.
I messed up and accidentally switched the main color and contrast colors early on, even before reaching the skull pattern, but by the time I realized it, didn't feel like ripping back. I wasn't sure who was going to end up with this hat, but as I suspected, C claimed it. It fits his head well and still will fit if when he grows his dreads back again. As you can see, it's huge on my head, but Adrian has a suggestion in her pattern for sizing it to fit smaller heads.
