March Sky Socks

Timsockspshat

At long last, after a three month sock sabbatical, a new pair of socks, for C's brother which will be winging themselves off to him in the mail tomorrow.  I was going to wait and send these for his birthday in May, however, since he just became the papa to a baby boy last week, I figure a pair of handknit socks just might come in handy for chilling-at-home time with his family.  Besides, it'll likely be getting a little hot in D.C. for wool socks by the time May rolls around, anyways.

Yarn: Meilenweit Fantasy #4834 with Elann Sock it To Me 4 ply, #44052 Slate, doubled for the heels and toes. Pattern: Wendy's Toe Up over 64 stitches on #2 addi turbo circulars.

This new little one is the little brother of two twin boys (all of them currently under the age of 2!) and so, of course, will never have any shortage of hand-me-downs.  Still, how can a knitter not make at least one little hat for a new nephew?

Pattern:  winged it as I went along.  Cast on 80 stitches, 20 stitches on each of four #2 dpns.  Join in the round.  Knit 3 x 1 ribbing for a little while.  Switch to knitting stockinette.  Knit for a while. Then, in the center of each of the needles, do four sets of paired decreases every third row until only 4 stitches are left.  Break yarn.  Thread through remaining four stitches. Weave in ends.  Mind you, I have no idea how this will fit, whether it will still have a point that sticks up or not when it's on the wearer, as it's been so long since having little babies of our own.

If forced to choose, I'd have to say that slate blues and greys are my favorite colors.  The evening skies have been extraordinary lately.  Keeping my eyes on the skies, and thus the trees as well.  We missed them ourselves, but did anyone happen to catch the Northern Lights last Saturday night?

Great socks and a sweet matching babe hat too! Looks like thawing, melting and Spring on the way for you.

What lucky boys! Those socks look great. In general, your socks look longer than mine. Do you use 150g of yarn or just 100g per pair? I'm always curious. I haven't been knitting as many socks lately (despite the fact that I have 3 pairs on the needles right now). I'm going to try to finish up one today and then I'll go look for some fun self-striping yarn as you've inspired me to make a gift pair for my nephew, too.

I have been watching your blog for a very long time and think that it is absolutely marvelous. Even though we live five hours north of you, we spend a lot of time in a town close to you. I love seeing your pictures - I have even been showing my husband the skiing ones. I was most jealous of your finds at the thrift store - I am going to be there in a week! I finally had to comment about the northern lights. We were driving home on Saturday night and had to pull off the road and watch them for about half an hour. We don't usually get to see them that vividly here. As you get further north, they actually develop into colors of the rainbow. It makes me want to cry to think that we could lose them to Siberia because the magnetic pole is moving towards there.

This is a really soothing colourway, and I love the matching baby hat! :0)

I agree -- I lovelovelove this color combination (I've stated gunmetal blue as my favorite color ever since I learned the name for it). And I lovelovelove a dark, cloudy sky with trees lit up from behind me, as in your first and third photographs. Thank you for starting off my day with them. Great socks and hat too, of course!

Great pictures! I love the dark sky and the big trees.

Also, I love the new E sweater in Mor Mor's gallery. Do you know the pattern name or is this something your mother made up? Great sweater!

I read your post about the family sweaters the other day. Did you know a similar pattern to your dad's sweater is in the Dale 125th Anniversary book? (The one your brother likes.) I just picked up a copy the other day to find a sweater to knit for my dad.

Wow. I just love your blog. Those tree photos are beautiful and your knitting is, as always, totally great!

Lovely socks, as always-----I guess I didn't notice you hadn't been knitting socks for a bit!?!

Northern Lights? I wish I lived just a bit north---I remember seeing them one time as a child but I don't think we can spot them this far south... Too bad, I'd love it!

AHH how sweet. Those colours work so well.

I love the colors on the socks. I always visit your blog for the photos. Especially when I am homesick for Montana.
