Inspired by Buzzville here and a flyer I picked up a couple of years ago at a health food store printed up by Frontier Herbs (I just found the same instructions online here), this year was finally the year to give this project a go. I've wanted to do this ever since the April 1998 issue of MSL Living came out featuring this. EIGHT years from inspiration to action?
The 2 golden eggs are dyed with turmeric. The 2 mid and 2 dark blue are red cabbage. The 1 light and 1 dark green ones are turmeric dyed, then overdyed in the leftover red cabbage dyebath for different lengths of time. The 3 lighter blue blue ones were a "failed" attempt at dyeing with dried hibiscus flower, then overdyed in the leftover red cabbage dyebath.
Although they did participate by putting the eggs in and scooping them out of the dyebath, the process was a bit too slow to catch the boys' interest the way the Paas type dyes did.
By the way, don't try dyeing eggs with Kool-Aid. The high citric acid content eats away at the egg shells. AND DON'T HANG YOUR NEWLY KOOL-AID DYED YARN OVER AN ENAMELED BATHTUB! It'll etch away at that, too. Believe me. I've learned the hard way.
